A short advertisement, known as a “pitch” within the publicity business, is considered to be proper etiquette for notifying program directors and producers that you are available for interview. Although a press release often generates interviews, a short advertisement or pitch is a lot more effective. Also, a pitch can be sent without having any real news to report. In contrast, a press release should never be sent unless there is a strong news item to report. From various tests that we have conducted, we have found that a well written pitch is usually 10X as effective as a press release in generating interviews.
Definitions:
Pitch or Short Advertisement: A pitch is used to suggest that an individual should be interviewed about a particular topic. The pitch does not need to have anything to do with news or an event. The pitch can be sent at anytime and about any topic.
Press Release: Press releases are used to notify the media of a news event. Usually this event must have occurred within 24 hours of the press release. If the press release is not about something urgent or new, it will often get ignored.
