MMD OFFERS THE FOLLOWING BASIC RULES FOR WRITING A PRESS RELEASE:
1. Must be written in third person unless you are quoting someone.
2. Must be about news. News is something new that has happened. If your press release is not about something
new, it is history and the media will ignore it.
3. Should be between 250 and 500 words. If it is less than 250 words, it is an advertisement.
If it is longer than 500 words it is a book or article. The purpose of a press release
is to give the media enough info for them to decide if they are interested in your story.
If they are interesed, they will contact you for more details.
4. State facts. When, where, how, why, who, what, etc.
5. Get to the point quickly. The media sees hundreds of press releases a day. If the headline
and first sentince is confusing, or does not come to the poing without fluff, they will
move on to the next release.
6. When writing, remember who your audience is. Your audience is not your customers. Your
audience is the journalists and editors.
